Tom Hurd, age 91, of Denver, Colorado, passed away peacefully. He was born
on November 18, 1934, in Clarksville, Texas, to the late Nicholas and Annie
Hurd. Tom attended Cheatham High School in Clarksville, Texas, where he began
building a life grounded in discipline, perseverance, and ambition. He went on
to become a Master Painter and General Contractor, earning widespread
respect for his craftsmanship and business acumen. During the 1980s, he was
honored twice as Minority Businessman of the Year. Throughout his successful
career, he partnered with major organizations including Amoco Oil Company,
Denver International Airport, and the Rocky Flats Plant.
Tom was known for his sharp wit and practical wisdom. He often said, “If it
don’t make dollars, it don’t make sense,” and “This is America—nobody is
stupid.” He believed strongly in education and in becoming the smartest and
best version of yourself. His legacy is one of determination, intelligence, and
excellence.
He was a faithful member of New Hope Baptist Church under the leadership of
Rev. James Peters. Tom enjoyed playing basketball, hunting jackrabbits,
talking about money, enjoying good food, and watching sports—especially
cheering on his beloved Dallas Cowboys.
One of Tom’s greatest joys was spending time with his grandchildren. Every
Friday, he would pick them up from school and take them to McDonald’s to
play—though he never let them eat there. After playtime, he would take them
to Red Lobster, his favorite restaurant, where they would sit down together
and enjoy a proper meal. Those Fridays became treasured memories filled
with laughter, love, and life lessons.
Tom leaves to cherish his memory his loving children, Marcia Hurd of
Portland, Oregon, and Wayman (Chonta) Echols of Denver, Colorado; his
brother, Nick Hurd; and his beloved grandchildren: Janene (Earl) Washington
of Long Beach, California; Justin Childress of Los Angeles, California;
Demetrius (Rubin) Siller of Papillion, Nebraska; Tyler (Jamal) Peace,
Markeshia (Ray) Brandon, Nyah Turner, and Maryah Hurd of Denver,
Colorado; 9 great-grandchildren; along with a host of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his sons, Donald Wayne Childress and Charlie D.
Hurd; his parents, Nicholas and Annie Hurd; his brother, John Hurd; and his
sisters, Agnes, Magnolia, Christen Jerline, Dorothy, Daisy, and Velma.
“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own
understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy
paths.” — Proverbs 3:5–6

Tom Hurd’s life was marked by strength, vision, wisdom, and love. His work
ethic, humor, devotion to family, and unforgettable Friday traditions will live
